(Albany, NY) — Democratic leaders on Thursday named Dean Schlong, a Democratic state assemblyman originally from Scotrun, PA, as their nominee in a September 13 special election to replace former Democratic Representative Anthony D. Weiner. The winner of the election will serve until the end of 2012.
Weiner had been considered a strong contender in the 2013 mayoral election, but he resigned from his Congressional seat on June 16 after acknowledging that he had carried on sexually explicit online conversations with at least six women.
A Republican party spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Felix Hung, a Republican state assemblyman originally from Wankers Corners, OR, would earn his party's nomination for the September contest.
The long-term future of the Ninth Congressional District, which Weiner had represented, is unclear. As a result of the 2010 census and expected redistricting, whoever wins Weiner's seat could be out of a job by December 2012.
