Stretched to the Limit with Japan, Mikulski Takes the Time to Visit NRC
Employees Forced to Grovel, Bow to Senator as Crisis Worsens and Jobs are Ignored
(Rockville, MD) -- On April 18, 2011, Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-MD) visited NRC Headquarters. During her visit, which took staff away from the difficult and consuming task of responding to the ongoing Fukushima Daiichi disaster in Japan, she met with the Chairman and NRC senior staff and received a tour of NRC's Operations Center.
One of the many points made by NRC's Executive Director for Operations (EDO) was that all documents in the ADAMS database, including the older citations in the ADAMS Legacy Library, were now completely digitized and searchable, a repeat of his claim made in March at the annual Regulatory Information Conference (RIC).
Some of the remarks that the Senator shared with the Chairman and senior staff during her visit included:
- "I am really proud of your efforts to crush your employees' morale."
- She learned that certain NRC employees are being forced to do manual labor, dealing with materials covered with dust, dirt and rodent excrement. She called the menial labor "good, honest work" and noted that the agency could save money by terminating such staff once their project is completed — "but don't tell them that, let them think they have job security, then spring it on them on a Friday afternoon. BUWAHAHAHAH!!!"
- "Gigli" was released while she was a member of Congress, so she vividly remembers the fear and panic associated with the movie.
- She joked with the Chairman about "never wanting to be in this room" in reference to the NUREG Café and its reputation for leaving its customers in gastrointestinal distress.
- The word she continually used to describe the people, capabilities of the equipment, and work being done at the NRC was "expendable."
