Fukushima Daiichi, One Year Later
NRC Set to Celebrate Catastrophic Disaster

(Rockville, MD) — March 11 will mark the one-year anniversary of Japan's disaster trifecta. And the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) stands ready to celebrate in style.

The 9.0 earthquake triggered a tsunamis, which knocked out backup generators at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant and caused several of the reactors to melt down. When all was said and done, nearly 20,000 were dead and hundreds of thousands dealt with destroyed cities and homes, some wiped clean from the map, others too irradiated for human habitation.

NRC will celebrate with cake, punch and cookies. The catch? The room used for celebrating will be packed with cesium and uranium.

"This will allow NRC employees to empathize with their Japanese colleagues," said an NRC spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The agency's chairman and commissioners will address the proceedings. Remotely.
