(Washington, DC) — A gaffe by President Obama during a Medal of Freedom ceremony has enraged Poland, which is demanding a stronger statement and apology than the White House has thus far provided. Poland's prime minister expressed his dissatisfaction over the statement describing Mr. Obama's reference to "Polish death camps" as a misstatement, saying he wants a "stronger, more pointed" response. The president was honoring a Polish World War II hero at the time of the remarks. The term "Polish death camps" is considered hugely offensive to Poles, who insist that the phrase "German death camps in Nazi-occupied Poland" is preferable. Mr. Obama released a statement today clarifying his apology. "He has expressed his regret, again, over the use of the term 'Polish death camps' on Wednesday," said a White House spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity. "In spite of knowing that many Poles are rabid anti-Semites, and in spite of knowing that some of the most horrific concentration camp were located in Poland, another apology has been issued. Henceforth he will use the phrase 'German death camps in Nazi-occupied Poland' when talking on the subject. American neo-Nazis immediately called Mr. Obama's apology offensive. "We resent the use of the term 'German death camps' in the same sentence as 'Nazi' or similar terms," said a neo-Nazi spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity. "We maintain that the Holocaust is a myth and that there really were no death camps in the first place. We demand an immediate apology from the Kenyan in the White House." The White House had no comment on the latest round of demanded apologies. |
